Our name
Our name has been inspired by the megalithic burial
tomb in Ireland. Newgrange
passage tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and dates from 3200
BC. Newgrange was constructed more than 1,000 years before Stonehenge,
and 600 years before the Giza Pyramids of Egypt.
The tomb is a marvel of engineering, and was constructed at a time
when no metal tools were available. The site covers over an acre of
land, and it has been estimated that it would have taken a workforce
of 300 people at least 20 years to build.
Archaeologists and historians believe that the burial tomb was constructed
as both a burial place for kings and as a complex form of measurement.
A 'roof box' is sited above the main entrance to the tomb, and as
the sun rises on the day of the winter solstice each year, the sun
light is at such an angle that it passes through the light box and
all the way to the centre of the tomb. The centre remains illuminated
for just 17 minutes. Research by Dr. Jon Patrick in 1972 confirmed
that the winter solstice orientation of the tomb was an original feature.

What can we learn
from this?
It is certain that a skilled, team-based organisation existed, with
some form of leadership that enabled the construction of a complex
feat of engineering. It is reasonable to assume that this would have
been by far the most sophisticated construction, and most significant
form of social organisation in that period. The team adapted to the
environment, the technology and the social needs of the time to achieve
an extraordinary outcome, probably beyond anything conceived before.
We can only estimate how the tomb formed part of people's lives at
that time.
We may each have our own theories, perspectives, ideas and preferences
to explain this monument. We can understand the complex organisations
of today in terms of the multiple perspectives by which people operate
within them. No one theory can explain everything about Newgrange.
No one approach can guarantee you success in your business. But you
can achieve great things within your organisations and careers. |
